ASTM F436 Hardened Structural Washers

Hardened steel washers provide a strong, smooth bearing surface beneath a bolt head or nut in high-strength F3125 structural connections and are used with F1554 anchor bolts. Portland Bolt supplies these washers to the ASTM F436 specification in standard and custom configurations, sizes, and finishes for demanding structural and anchor bolt applications.

Whether you need washers for A325, A490, or Grade 144 structural bolts, F1554 anchor bolts, or other high-strength fasteners, hardened washers are available in circular, wide-outside-diameter (USS pattern), extra-thick, beveled, clipped, and custom forms, with domestic manufacturing and in-house hot-dip galvanizing for nonstandard sizes.

Hardened Washer Types

What a Hardened Washer Does

A hardened washer distributes the clamping load of a tightened connection and provides a hard bearing surface that resists embedment into the connected steel. Because they are heat-treated or carburized for added strength, hardened washers are used with structural and high-strength fasteners rather than the softer F844 flat washers used in general applications. ASTM F436 covers these washers and sets the chemical, mechanical, and dimensional requirements for hardened washers with nominal diameters from 1/4″ through 4″.

What Fasteners They Work With

Hardened structural washers are commonly used with A325, A490, and Grade 144 structural bolts (now consolidated under ASTM F3125), and are also suitable for use with A449, A354, A193, A320, and F1554 fasteners. The washer type and material should be compatible with the bolt and nut used in the assembly.

Where They Are Used

Hardened washers are used across structural and heavy construction where high-strength bolted connections are required, including pre-engineered metal buildings, structural steel buildings, bridges, industrial facilities, equipment foundations, towers, sign structures, and infrastructure projects. Their hard bearing surface helps distribute load and deliver reliable performance in demanding connections. Hardened washers are also the standard washer used with F1554 Grades 36, 55, and 105 anchor bolts.
